Premier Vision week… a busy week for the industry and a busy week for me!
This week marked Premier Vision SS20, with designers from all over the world travelling to Paris to see what the fabric and textile world had to offer for the new season. Back in the showroom, for myself and the remaining team, the sample orders began to come in, from both highstreets and major fashion houses. I struggled at first, not just with reading the scribbled writing, but hunting down each specified fabric and shade card! The other challenge was when designers requested specific colours for the fabric types. Some colour names are obvious as to what they look like, however some not so much and even to start with, small colour changes like bottle and forest green took a moment to work out.
Two days and a whole load more orders down and I was finally into the swing of things. I had picked up which fabric came under each category (apart from the structured and textures which still throw me sometimes!) and when seeing a colour name I began to visualise it in my head more clearly. All the while picking the samples, I was and still am subconsciously learning about the different feels and weights of the fabrics, with my colleagues always adding in the background to the different more intricate designs. For example how cloque , jacquards and matelassé are made. It has been so fascinating to learn all these different types of fabrics and to see all the possibilities of what can be made with the different techniques.
I got to hone on in my newfound knowledge more towards to the end of the week when we got two very open sample orders come in. One was from a theatre, interested in different floral brocades and brocatelle’s. With the request left at that, I got the opportunity to have a look through and pick out the fabrics that I thought would be best suited for the job. It was good to the free reign over what was selected and a great opportunity to put my eye for colour and fabrics to the test. The following day we got the second of the open requests. This time, it was from a leading merchandising company who specialise in mannequins and bust forms. They were looking for fabrics for vintage looking mannequins, in a taupe/brown colour. The rest was left to me! Thinking about the different fabrics we had, I identified which were the more strong textures fabrics, that I personally thought would be a good match for the company. Once I had made my selections, I was able to get them sent off to the companies and now just have to wait to see if an order for the fabric follows soon!
