. OXIDISE .
Oxidise, is inspired by abandoned architecture and the redemption of buildings. My project idea was formed after a trip to Rome, where I was inspired by the buildings surrounding me. With crumbling bricks, distressed paintwork and worn colour, I was quickly drawn towards the beauty within decay. During my research I discovered how every building has a story to tell and in abandoned architecture this shouldn’t go unnoticed. I wanted to take this idea of reusing the old and turning it into something new and beautiful for my collection.
I have patched together old denim to create elements of my designs. Architecture and fashion alike, the strongest materials used are the most durable. With this in mind, I felt that denim was the perfect way for me to showcase redemption within my work, reflecting the regeneration of old buildings.
The rest of my fabrics come from designer offcuts. I was nervous that my choices would be limited when buying my fabrics but I was wrong! There were so many options, many of which I had previously not considered. These fabrics helped enhance both my designs and print development.
I wanted to show that sustainability is achievable for everyone. You should choose a sustainable method that works for your designs, rather than designing to fit a set method. When you look at my designs you can see that, yes the denim is recycled, but the rest of the fabric you wouldn’t know were designer off cuts. This relates back to my theme of not destroying the old but bringing it back to life, in new and exciting ways.
