As part of my placement year module, I have been given the task of creating a poster. The aim being to promote my experiences across the year, hopefully inspiring other to take on the year long opportunity.
When I first saw this part on the brief, I wasn’t too sure where to begin. I always have a struggle when creating posters, finding that they end up looking generic with a lack of creativeness behind them. However I knew that with some work, I could make sure this wasn’t the case this time round. I began by trying to think up a way to combine all the different placements. With completing two placements already and two more lined up, I wanted to show that working in a range of different positions a good route to go down when for the year. As each of my placements are so different however, finding a way to combine them into a poster was the hard part. As mentioned to date, I have only completed two of the four placements, meaning a lack in the range of photos. It was thinking of these photos that sparked an idea in my mind!
Alongside blogging, I have been recording my journey on my Instagram. I have been able to get some great shots of different elements at work, each of which I have edited into my own style and posted. Instagram is a huge platform in the industry for promotional purposes, alongside being a wildly known, creative outlook, for young people. What is posted on social media, if done right, can really influence and impact those viewing it. With this in mind, I took the idea and turned it into a poster!
Using the basic Instagram layout that you would find on a computer or laptop screen, I created the layout for my design. I played around and changed the wording of the titles, helping me to make my point of promoting the year out. I made sure to add in some basic advice to the ‘description’ line, along with a statement at the bottom, to give the final inspirational push. The images I chose are designed to show which areas of the industry I experienced different learning elements. Mixed in with these photographs, I took each company’s logo, giving them their own box to show where I had completed my placements.
After getting some feedback, I went on to adding a ‘like’ element to the design. This is to highlight the order in which I rated my placements, for both enjoyment and development, within my current career goals. As I haven’t completed two of them, the rating for these is my anticipated rating, going off the job descriptions and interviews. The feedback also suggested adding a colour background instead of the dark grey. However after playing around with the colours, I felt that grey worked best with the overall theme of the poster. Although the colours make the poster jump out slightly more, I felt it took the eye away from the photos, one of the key elements.
Overall I am happy with how my finished poster turned out! I feel that it’s relatable to students looking into taking a placement year, clearly illustrates the value of internships and helps to promote the experience as a whole!
