One of my goals for 2019 has been to open myself up to and take on as many opportunities as I can! Whether that may be buying tickets to the new Dior exhibition or agreeing to help the launch of a new brand (I’ll get on to that later!), I have been making it my aim to grasp at anything that has come my way.
On Tuesday this week, I went along to an interview at Teatum Jones. The position I had applied for was a studio internship over the summer. I have always heard great things about working for Teatum Jones from previous interns, so this was definitely an opportunity that I didn’t want to miss out on.
I found myself so absorbed in what I was being briefed on in the interview. The list of possible jobs that I would be doing and projects that I would get to work with are all exactly the sort of areas of the industry that I want to focus on in my career. Coming out of the interview I knew the internship was the perfect fit for me and after being offered the role a few days later, I am excited for the time to come for the placement to start! I feel this is the perfect next step after my internship at Absence of Paper. At Absence of Paper, I got to work on the product development, including pattern cutting, toiling and technical. Teatum Jones will allow me to have a hand at all of these areas again, but in more depth, along with getting to see even more behind the scenes such as PR, factory visits and even the possibility of show preparation!
The next opportunity that has been thrown my way, is an exciting and scary one! A couple of weeks ago I was recommended by a friend to someone who is at the start of their journey to launch their own brand. Michael has been working in the graphic design industry for the majority of his career to date and for the past year or so has been slowly working away on a side project; a fun sporty underwear fashion brand. He has such a clear vision and a strong talent for design, but has been stumped when it comes to bringing the project to life, which is where I have been asked to step in! I’m going to leave it there for now and will feature a whole post of this exciting project, with more information and pictures soon! But for now all I can say is I am going to be hard at work for the next few months!
Back to my current internship… it has been another jam packed week of sending out samples to customers and doing some more sewing to create the sample bags. As we have had so many requests come through, this week meant that we began to run short of shade cards. I was set on the task of creating a whole range of the shade cards for different fabrics. It was fun job to do and satisfying seeing all the stunning colours. It was the range of colours available that sparked an interesting conversation. After writing my winning article for the brief, ‘The Pantone Conversation; from digital to tangible’, my interest for colour theory has grown and hearing about it from a new view point was defiantly thought provoking.
The idea discussed was, that we can see more colours when we have more names for them. The theory arose after an experiment was done on TV a few years ago. Children with different native tongues were given coloured cards and were told to split them up into colour groups. The results showed that the children with the languages that have more names for colours, naturally split them into more categorise. It was this that sparked the question of ‘does this mean they can see more colours?’ I love the idea of this theory and it’s something that I want to research further and maybe even write an article to follow on from my one last year!
It was some great food for thought and something I want to push myself to learn more about.
