Getting into a Routine - AoP Week 5

Updated: Mar 23, 2019

5 weeks into my internship and I have to say I have settled down into a routine. I say routine, but my routine stretches as far as my journey to work. I’ve got used to waking up at 7, having a slow morning before jumping on a train at 8.30. My train itself only takes 45 minutes but then I have a choice. I can either get a 15 minute bus to the studio or walk and at the moment the walk always wins! It’s so nice to get 30 minutes exercise and autumn air before being indoors for the rest of the day! I even sometimes manage to sit in the park for 15 minutes with a coffee before I start at 10!

That’s where my routine ends though and every day is different. Different projects to work on, different jobs to do and different challenges to overcome.

At the start of this week I was working on a production sample. As the previous week had been Paris sales, it meant that problems had been flagged up and ideas grown. It was down to me and the designer to make these changes happen and altering the production samples was the first step. It was good learning how to quickly adapt an already made garment and I enjoyed seeing the changes coming together.

That aside, the more changes to the garments meant the more technical changes and I spent the rest of the week working my way through editing the technical files. I worked in creating close up detailed technical drawings, illustrating specific areas of the garments, showing measurements and how they needed to be put together. My illustrator skills have already began to develop further in the short time I’ve been working and the more I’m learning the more I can see when something doesn’t look right. I like that I know what I’m doing enough to not have to ask any questions, but with feedback there and then, I do end up having to change lots of bits until it’s perfect. However these changes are slowly getting less and less as I get better. My goal is that by the end of the six months, I can produce a technical drawing and have it signed off first time.
