Frustration and Accomplishment - AoP Week 8

Updated: Mar 24, 2019

Bad weeks happen. Everyone has them. Sometimes they carry on until the start of the next week, sometimes the week does get better.

This was my bad week. I haven’t had a bad day since starting my internship, let alone a bad week, so I knew that I had to hit a rut soon.

Old Labels

It began at the start of the week. The boring jobs that needed to be done. It didn’t help how tired I was feeling when I got to work and then was put straight onto doing the company expenses. It’s one of those jobs that needs to be done but one that nobody enjoys doing. Last month was okay to do, it was a learning experience and the expenses that needed adding were easy to deal with. This month however, included the Paris expenses making the whole process more complicated and time consuming! To top that off, I finished the day cutting labels up. Before being recycled all of the old labels needed chopping up and I was set on that task working my way through a couple of boxes. By the end of the day I felt drained.

Commute Home - West Hampstead

The following day was a strange day too. I wasn’t in until noon and headed straight over to head office. We were due a progress meeting along with meeting a supplier to negotiate pricing. It was interesting to sit in on the meetings but I couldn’t help feel like a spare part. As much as I wanted to, there wasn’t anything I could contribute on leaving me feeling a bit deflated.

Head Office Meeting

By Thursday I was ready for the week to end, but there was a lot still to be done. I was asked to create the new technical drawing from scratch. I was nervous to start but took it as a compliment to my capabilities. I began quickly, but soon found myself frustrated. I couldn’t get elements of the design right and having had a slightly poor week I didn’t have much patience left! I wasn’t happy with my first attempt when I showed my boss, but she was helpful in her feedback and pointed me in the right direction for the changes. After giving myself a short break, I pulled it together and was determined to make the technical perfect! It took a while, longer than I would have liked but I was persistent and eventually was happy with the final product. I showed it again to my boss who was impressed and pleased with the final outcome. It was a valuable lesson to myself about pushing through the bad days and working to turn them around to be good days.

Technical Drawing - Final Outcome

I know there will be many more days to come where I will just want to give up and go home. I also know that it’s those days that’ll I’ll learn the most about myself. I can see that from my internship I am not only learning a lot about the industry but that I am growing as a person. Days and weeks like these I have to learn how to overcome and getting to understand the way I work best is becoming hugely beneficial. This is something I will be able to carry forward into final year and will be help me towards managing my work load and pushing through when things get hard!
