Designer Bags - Henry Bertrand Week 4

I got to take on a sewing task this week! Something that I love and always look forward to doing. This job was to create samples bags that would be send out to customers, containing the samples. It’s a nice finishing touch to the orders, making them feel special, personalised and a good way of branding. The bag design is simple. A seam at the bottom and either side, a double fold hem at the top and two ribbon ties; one coming from the bottom seam, the other attached with a cross stich to the back of the bag. Although the bag is easy to construct and a simple process, it was a task that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Fabric Selection

Overlocker Time

The fabrics used for the bags, come from a selection of the discontinued Prestigio fabrics. All very unique and colourful designs! This was where the fun was, getting to mix and match the fabrics, trying to come up with combinations that didn’t clash yet were bold, fun and unique. The overall sewing element became a good practice for my basic skills. Although I was only sewing straight lines for the most, it was good to have to practice of getting something simple so perfect, especially with the hem. I made sure to press it once, fold and press it again, before stitching it from the top to get to correct stitch. The other one I got to perfect, was sewing on the ribbon. A small square box with a cross inside can be quite a fiddly thing to get perfect, but after the first few bags, with a slightly wonky cross, they began to get better and my confidence in doing them grew to the point that they are now near perfect. It’s been a while since I have gone back to the basics and refined my sewing skills, but I have learnt that it is something that I should take more time to do, as I now feel very confident with these basic stitches.

Constructing the Bag

Once the bags were finished, I got to select which one went to which fashion house. It may only be a small achievement, but knowing that some of the world biggest fashion houses will be receiving their samples in a bag that I have handmade, is a satisfying achievement. They may not know I made them and they may not care; but the fact that I have created a bag that may have an impact, whether it’s just a ‘Ooh that’s a cool design’ or it go on to become a notebook, make up or iPad pouch, is a rewarding step for me during my internship.
