It’s been a while since I last posted, getting on for a year and what a year it has been! After my last post about working for 6 months in the industry, I went onto completing another 4 months as a studio assistant before returning to uni in September for the final year of my degree (which has been cut short thanks to COVID-19 but I’ll get to that later).
My final 4 months working were at two new companies, Amanda Kelly, print design and Teatum Jones, design house. Both very different but equally great places to work! While at Amanda Kelly I got the opportunity to create repeat patterns and colour ways for different buyers and retailers. Although I was mainly computer based for this role, I did get to spend a couple of days creating paintings and patterns to be worked into digital prints at a later date. Having never experience much of the print industry, it was a great new experience and made me decided that I wanted to incorporate a print into my final collection!
The second placement Teatum Jones was more back into my area of expertise and I was able to use all the skills that I had gained at Absence of Paper. I got to complete tasks like pattern cutting, garment construction, QC checks and many more. Again another great placement that I learnt so much from. This takes me up to the start of September and the move back to uni. Going into my final year at uni, was a nervous yet exciting challenge. With a big year ahead of me, I knew there would be a lot of challenges thrown my way. I had managed to spend some time before September researching into my final collection concept, so I was going in with a clear plan and lots of motivation. The first few weeks sped by and we were straight into it all! Sketchbooks were being filled, new garment samples appearing each week and a whole load of fun during studio times. Before We all knew it, it was time to head off to Paris to complete our fabric shopping. Having been when in I first year, I knew what to expect and quickly got into the swing of finding fabrics. The whole experience of fabric buying in another city was one that I thoroughly enjoyed and would love to do again! (I will be dedicating a whole post to the experience soon!).
Back from Paris and that meant deadline was looming and after a few late nights and lots of coffee, we had hit that half way point of final year! Christmas was a great chance to have a relaxing break before heading back for semester 2 and the home stretch. This last semester has gone great, with sewing final garments, photoshoots and portfolio development! I was enjoying spending my final few months with my friends and then within days all that changed….
